200 Victoria Street Melbourne VIC

role Architecture value $75 million

The project 200 Victoria Street is situated on the corner of Victoria and Leicester Streets in Melbourne, diagonally opposite the Victoria Market on the fringe of the Central Activities District.

The proposed building comprises residential apartments with commercial/retail space at ground to activate the two street edges. There are 23 levels in total, inclusive of one basement level, ground level, plus 21 floors above ground. Car parking occupies the 5 lowest floors. The first level of apartments, which is also the roof of the car parking levels, provides outdoor amenities for the residents of the building including a swimming pool, terrace, bar-be-que area and sauna.

The building design is relatively simple in its construction yet dramatically unorthodox in its form. The proposed building relates directly to the immediate complex street context and its location at the periphery between the city centre and a fast developing University Campus in Carlton South. The resulting expression is one of a faceted glass crystal, enhanced by the use of tinted glazing for facades and balustrade screens.
