peckvonhartel would like to congratulate Balibo House Trust on the opening of the Balibo Fort Hotel and the Culture and Heritage Centre in Timor-Leste. The hotel is located within a 300 year old Portuguese Fort in Balibo, Timor-Leste, which sits high in the hills and offers a spectacular view of the ocean. It remains an important site in memory of the Balibo Five who filmed the Indonesian invasion from here in 1975. The centre will support and stimulate the local community providing ongoing employment and training opportunities and is envisaged as a major tourism drawcard to the region.

peckvonhartel is proud to be involved in this historic project as the project architect. Eight brand new hotel rooms have been constructed along with a complete refurbishment of the old Fort House which was built in 1946. The restored Fort House is now the restaurant and meeting place for guest including an outdoor leisure area and community museum.

The Balibo Fort Hotel and Culture and Heritage Center was opened by Timor-Leste’s Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão, with the Balibo House Trust, other government dignitaries and visitors including Australian Ambassador to Timor-Leste, Peter Doyle and former Premier of Victorian, the Hon Steve Bracks attending to inaugurate this important new tourist destination.
