411 Collins Street Melbourne VIC
role Architecture, Interior Design area 11,000 m² completion date August 2007
Following the sale of the former Roy Morgan research centre, peckvonhartel were approached by the new owners to transform the building into a boutique commercial and retail hub in the financial and legal sector of the city.
peckvonhartel's design of the ground floor and 7 upper commercial floors involved major structural alterations to create a prominent entry off street level with polished marble and sculptural lighting. A suspended mezzanine floor was constructed to give the foyer a sense of grandeur and to create a contemporary focal point with reflective cladding giving the illusion that it is floating in the air.
Listed as a notable building on the Melbourne Planning Scheme, the refurbishment kept the building envelope untouched but wireglass windows were replaced with single panel clear glass throughout and original features such as the tenancy board and front doors have been retained and repaired and incorporated into the design to update the building while still embracing the original architecture and character of the building.
