Further to peckvonhartel’s role as Design Advisor to the Victorian Government Department of Justice for the 600 bed Remand Prison and the 300 bed Correctional Programs prison at Marngoneet, peckvonhartel has been appointed Design Advisor for the new Prison at Ararat Victoria.

The project, to be procured by a PPP, comprises the addition of 350 medium security beds to the existing 300 bed prison at Ararat. The existing prison is to remain operational and at capacity during the process and at the conclusion of the process, shared facilities are to serve the entire prison contingent.

A shortlist of bidders was announced on 23 June 2009 and the Request for Proposal was distributed to those bidders on 23 July 2009. The Interactive Tender Process is proceeding through August to October 2009 with two bidders. The private sector consortium will design, build, finance and maintain the facility, while custodial services are provided by Corrections Victoria. In return, the consortium will receive service payments once the prison is operational, subject to meeting performance standards.

The Department of Justice is managing procurement of the facility. The Ararat Prison expansion is expected to be completed in late 2012.
