Bavarian Bier Café 2-4 Phillip Street, Parramatta

role Architecture and Interior Design client Bavarian Hospitality Group area 1,500m² completion date Current

Bavarian Hospitality Group engaged peckvonhartel to design a new restaurant and bier café at 2-4 Phillip Street Parramatta, located in two existing heritage listed buildings, St. Andrew’s Church and Church Hall.

This restaurant is the fourth in the Bavarian Bier Café chain, and the brief was to design a space that reflects the existing cafes in the City of Sydney and at Manly Wharf. The solution incorporates the intent of the briefed models yet varies to best suit the fabric and volume of the existing church space.

The scope of the design includes several new bars and seating areas, outdoor alfresco dining, lounge areas as well as new kitchens and amenities. The bar dominates the church building surrounded by communal bier tables, very much reminiscent of a traditional Bavarian Bier hall. Mezzanine levels have been incorporated as lounge areas that aid the creation of cosy, private spaces and alleviate the vastness of the overall space. Intimacy is also achieved by incorporating booth seating and semi-closed areas. The material palette is very much in keeping with a classic European café and employs rich, warm timbers and leathers.

Much attention has been given to minimising building outlays and operational costs. The existing locations of services, amenities and kitchens have been retained, and the interior and exterior works are being completed in separate phases to best allow for efficiencies and timeliness.
