Beckett Park is an inner eastern suburban park adjacent to the Maranoa Gardens in Balwyn. The Beckett Park public toilet services an adjacent playground, parkland and ‘lookout tower.’ The public toilet refurbishment and upgrade project was part of a larger package of minor upgrade-works to the City of Boroondara’s existing facilities.

The design sought to utilize the existing outer fabric of the toilet block including the existing roof and walls, while inserting a new automated accessible unisex bathroom and ambulant toilet within the envelope. The cutting-edge fully prefabricated bathroom facilities allow for easy cleaning and provide the requirement for limited future maintenance. The external architectural design reinforces this low-maintenance requirement through material choice of recycled timber-look façade and a durable render to the existing brickwork.

An additional requirement for the project was for temporary amenities to be provided during the upgrade. These were provided next to the building utilizing the new access pathways which were constructed prior to the decommissioning of the existing toilet block.

The public toilet facility design is an exemplar of the shift away from dark and hidden public amenities to those that are safe, clean, low-maintenance and accessible to all.
