Canberra Convention Centre Centre-West Basin, Section 33, Acton ACT

role Architecture, Concept Design, Master Planning

peckvonhartel, for the ACT Chief Minister's Department, prepared a 3D concept for the Canberra Convention Centre on Lake Burley Griffin's West Basin. This site option meets the government's objective to enliven the lake edge providing a dynamic entertainment precinct for visitors and local community. The proposal anchors the proposed City West Master Plan.

The concept emphasises the need to bridge the divide between the city and the lake at a vehicular and pedestrian level, by providing a land bridge across Parkes Way as an extension of Marcus Clarke Street and adjoining areas. The scheme maintains spectacular views to the Brindabellas from Civic and City Hill and utilises these view corridors not only as primary sight lines, but assimilation and recognition of the site's relationship with the city, and with Burley Griffin's axial node - City Hill.

The concept further enhances usage of the lake by providing water's edge restaurants, cafes and shops and a sweeping promenade around the lake foreshore, engaging the user with the water, and paying reverence to Burley Griffin's original geometrical concept for the west basin.
