Chapman Primary School Perry Dr, Chapman ACT

peckvonhartel managed the design of Chapman Primary School in Canberra as part of the Federal Government Education Stimulus Package ‘Building The Education Revolution’. Chapman Primary School is a P21 category school and gained a new Library, LOTE area, and Performing Arts learning facilities.

Designed along the existing central spine of the school the new work provides two simple skillion roofed pavilions that are linked by a covered walkway, one containing the Library and support facilities, the other hosting LOTE and Performing Arts spaces, toilets and a staff room.

The materials used are concrete block and fibre cement sheet painted orange and green to complement and continue the theme featured in the adjacent hall. Exposed steel framing and powdercoated Customorb metal sheeting to the front and rear walls add to the sense of lightness of construction. Seating boxes are articulated at each end and large double doors open to the front and rear schoolyards encouraging interaction with the surrounding school.

The use of careful siting, passive ventilation through high level louvres, large overhanging eaves, rainwater collection, and sustainable building materials and finishes have significantly reduced the building’s carbon footprint.
