peckvonhartel was engaged by PricewaterhouseCoopers to undertake a master plan and consolidate a strategy for the development of the Australian Centre for Christianity and Culture Canberra campus of the Charles Sturt University in Barton. The strategy incorporates an ‘Institute for Inclusion’ (The Institute) that will provide an arena for cultural, municipal and religious activities with the aim to develop and foster interfaith understanding in the general community. Proposed to be located in the ‘middle of the community’, it will be a dynamic public space, a focal point in the Nation’s Capital creating a sense of belonging in all who visit.
The Institute will be developed in conjunction with Charles Sturt University to coordinate and expand existing functions, which include the Australian Centre for Christianity and Culture, the Research Centre for Public and Contextual Theology and the ARC Special Research Centre in Applied Philosophy and Public Ethics.
The Institute will also have the capacity and ability to run training programs for Australia’s diplomatic service, its armed forces, police and the public service. These programs are to aid in developing a deeper understanding of religions, especially Christianity, Judaism and Islam and their relationship to other religious traditions in the Australian community and the region.
The existing site has an area of 4.6 hectares and is one of the few sites near the Parliamentary Triangle. peckvonhartel prepared area schedules and a return brief to establish the project vision and overall accommodation requirements.
