Collingwood Walls Collingwood VIC

role Architecture value $2 million completion date May 2011 client Victorian Government

peckvonhartel was engaged to provide full design services for the re-construction of two walls of the facility that had been deemed unsafe and duly demolished.

The walls required two distinct solutions in order to satisfy both council and client needs. For the first solution a portion of wall that was heritage listed, required detailed set-out drawings and careful construction detailing to provide a brick solution that as far as possible matched the demolished wall.

The second solution was required for a later 1970’s brick wall that sat within a heritage overlay zone and required a quick construction method and response to the red brick character and existing walls within the area. A precast panel solution was adopted that carefully folded to represent the brick and pier wall that it replaced. The panels were coloured in a deep red pigment to seamlessly integrate them with the streetscape in which they sit.

Security and construction timeframes were paramount client requirements. The 100m+ precast wall was completed promptly and allowed the facility to regain its high level of security. The heritage section of brick work was also reinstated within programmed time limits.
