Customs Fitout, Port Adelaide SA

role Lead Consultant, Interior Design area 2,500m² completion date 2012 client Australian Customs and Border Protection Services

peckvonhartel was engaged by Australian Customs and Border Protection Service (Customs) in the role of lead consultant for the proposed Adelaide Customs Fitout in Customs House, Port Adelaide SA.

Customs had decided to extend its lease of the property at 220 Commercial Road, Port Adelaide for a further 10 years, which triggered the need for a complete redesign of their fitout on the ground and first floors of the building to accommodate future development.

The fitout included a number of highly specialised areas such as the firearms testing and exam room, electronic forensics room, DGM (detained goods management), DDU (detector dog unit) and armoury. The new fitout also required a large communications room with high-level security, technical and environmental requirements.

Some of the main challenges of the project included the need to maintain business operation during the project, balancing multiple high security zones with general circulation to determine a practical secure perimeter, improving occupational density in line with PRODAC requirements and integration of works with base building upgrade.

The peckvonhartel team managed the coordination with base building and fitout engineering consultants NDY, while providing support to the project manager (Coffeys) and construction manager (ISIS). peckvonhartel provided extensive advice and planning for the staging strategy and ultimately delivered a project that has since been used by Customs as a template for future national accommodation guidelines.
