Grasshopper Bar and Restaurant 50 - 54 York St, Sydney NSW

role Interior Design value $70,000 area 180m² completion date April 2010 client Scudooda

Grasshopper is possibly Sydney's hardest to find laneway bar. Located on Temperance Lane, which runs off George Street, it's not visible from the main street. Tucked away in a service lane Grasshopper offers an intimate alternative to the gigantic offerings down the road.

peckvonhartel acted as interior design consultants to Grasshopper creator's Martin O'Sullivan and Belinda Lai, the pair are industry veterans in Sydney having also established popular eatery The Lincoln and managed the 7 metre bar for the City of Sydney. In collaboration with the client early sketch plans were developed to DA stage and once granted, we had an active role in the construction phase of the project providing significant advice on both design related and compliance issues.

The top level of Grasshopper is a restaurant with an open kitchen; the ambiance is intimate with low lighting and close tables offering a concise but well considered menu. The downstairs bar is wallpapered with vintage kung fu images, the room is filled with 70s-era armchairs and lamps, the tunes are classic and beer is served by the bottle.

In stark contrast to many of Sydney’s polished wine bars Grasshopper presents us with a more down to earth experience. Exposed services and reclaimed timber sleepers give the space a unique look whilst the second hand furniture adds to the bars quirky edge.

The small budget often dictated key design decisions but, as a product of this, gave us a cosy and welcome addition to the Sydney bar scene.
