Kingsleys Steak & Crabhouse Canberra Canberra Centre, Bunda Street Canberra ACT

role Interior Design value $1.2 million area 270 m² completed date May 2007

Kingsleys Steak & Crabhouse are expanding to open restaurants in Canberra and Melbourne following the successful opening of Kingsleys in Riparian Plaza Brisbane in August 2006.

peckvonhartel's design for the Canberra restaurant provides an integrated dining and drinking experience that appropriates the classic aesthetics and culture of the New York steakhouse, French bistro, and Australian vernacular forming an identity suited to the Kingsleys food culture.

The heart of the restaurant is the bar where patrons can gather for a social drink or meal. This experience is carried through to the bar style seating on the outdoor terrace. The bar incorporates a feature crab tank and meat display giving insight into the inner workings of the open kitchen format.

The choice of materials reflects the Kingsleys commitment to local produce with the use of reclaimed timbers, recycled doors and rustic leathers in the design. The heights and rhythms of the timber wall paneling and continuous lighting pelmet set the datum lines for the remaining architectural elements to conform to.

Patterned tile borders surrounding the bar hark back to the 1930’s French Bistro era together with vintage pendant lighting overhead and above the classic styled booth seating.
