peckvonhartel was engaged to design the refurbishment of the existing pool and penthouse as well as an additional 22 suites and fa├žade upgrade of the Stamford Plaza Hotel in Melbourne. Originally designed in 1988, the hotel was long overdue for an upgrade to bring it in line with its 5 star rating and to replace finishes that had come to the end of their lifespan.

The brief for the penthouse refurbishment was to open up the space and bring some elements of loft-style living to the environment whilst enhancing the luxury and glamour expected of a penthouse suite. The design removed an existing mezzanine to open up a dramatic double height space. A new, smaller mezzanine incorporates a work space with a glass balustrade allowing an elevated view of the suite. Striking black finishes complement the otherwise neutral palette and are a stylish addition to the updated and understated newly furnished suite. The same palette is carried through to the bathroom with bespoke fittings and recessed lighting details to accentuate the mood and detailing of the bathroom.

The same scheme was adopted for the additional 22 suites providing a design addressed to business travellers and holiday makers alike.

The brief for the pool was to provide a new design direction, and a fresh and relaxing environment. The result is a dramatic space making the best use of the light from the operable roof and creating a luxurious lounge section in the more enclosed area. A black and white palette is complemented by warm bronze mirrors and tiles on the spa.

These projects, which involved technical and structural challenges, were completed within a short programme. peckvonhartel worked collaboratively with the contractor and the client to meet the deadlines, providing Stamford Plaza Melbourne with new and refurbished facilities appropriate to their market.
