peckvonhartel were engaged to undertake a 26 suite renovation of the Stamford Plaza Hotel in Melbourne, coupled with a Collins Street façade renovation.

The suites build upon the design language of the recently refurbished penthouse and pool areas which peckvonhartel were also appointed to design.

The 26 units are replicated in mirrored pairs across 13 levels of the hotel and feature an open plan bed and living space as well as an ensuite and desk nook within a compact floor area.

The brief highlighted the need to design to accommodate a varied clientele with both a corporate and leisure focus, and reflects this in the high quality of the finishes chosen. A union of functionality and comfort was achieved in the careful selection of loose furniture and integrated storage joinery.

Recessed bulkhead lighting creates the impression of floatation and lightness within the suite. The contrast of dark finishes and strong geometries reinforces the distinctive character of the refurbishment.

As part of the refurbishment, two of the hotel suites on level 4 are now fully DDA compliant. peckvonhartel's attention to detail in the design of the ensuites in these rooms ensured the finishes were in keeping with the rest of the hotel.

The renovation of the hotel’s façade included building in a recessed façade element which created an opportunity to achieve more space to dedicate to the hotel rooms.

During the construction period, which lasted approximately 6 months, minimum disruption to hotel operation and room availability occurred as only the two rooms adjacent to the construction zone were closed.
