The Austral Buildings 115 Collins Street, Melbourne VIC
role Architecture value $20 million area 4,000m² completed date 1994
The Austral Buildings date from 1895 and are adjacent to the Hyatt Hotel. The five storey structure plus basement included a series of rooftop artists studios which were in use until recent times.
The restoration and renovation works converted all the upper floors to prestige offices, while retaining the garret-like character of the former artist's studios. The façade was carefully cleaned, roofs were reclad in slate and the original decorative finials were reinstated. The surviving shop fronts were retained.
Extensive internal alterations were required to enable the building to conform to current office and building code requirements. These alterations were undertaken in such a way that the historic character of the upper floors was not impaired.
