The Peak Jells Road Wheelers Hill, VIC

role Architecture area 22,000m² project value $45 million

The Peak is located at a corner site on Wheeler’s Hill bound by Ferntree Gully Road and Jells Road. The proposal is a nine-storey apartment building with approx. 110 apartments; a central entry lobby, pool area and garden terrace; three separate lift cores and two underground carparking levels for 260 cars.

The building comprises nine storeys at the peak of the hill and road intersection, but steps down in height at both ends to integrate with neighbouring buildings. Rather than being a continuous solid form parallel to the street edge, the main building is proposed to be broken and cranked as it steps around the corner. This would provide the impression of multiple buildings in perspective rather than one homogenous form. The angled nature of the balconies provides a multi-levelled textural quality to the façade avoiding monotonous repetition, which is further enhanced by the variation of apartment types throughout the building.

The proposal was undertaken as a joint venture partnership with Hassell Architects, Melbourne. A Town Planning Application lodged for the proposed development was refused at a special panel hearing called by the Minister for Planning.
