The Philadelphia Building 31 Spring Street, Melbourne VIC

role Architecture value $24 million area 9,000m² completed date October 2000

The Philadelphia Building converted an existing 12 storey 1960's office building into an elegant 27 storey prestige residential tower containing 112 apartments. The addition of 15 floors was made possible by the building foundation in rock. Five lower floors were converted to carparking and a façade upgrade was achieved through removal of the existing brick façade and replacement by glazed panels. A restaurant enjoys the ground floor and first floor location.

A major part of the upgrading to the lower half of the building is the use of external 'wintergarden' areas where terraces or balconies have floor to ceiling glass with openable panels that enable external space to be enjoyed in all weather. These can be closed during periods of inclement weather without losing the use of the wintergarden itself.

Located opposite Melbourne’s Treasury Gardens, the views from both within the apartments and from the wintergardens are outstanding.
