Union Dining 270-272 Swan St, Richmond Vic

role Interior Design value $600,000 area 500m² completion date April 2011 client Adam Cash & Nicky Riemer

peckvonhartel was approached to design a provincial European inspired restaurant situated in the heritage listed Union House in Richmond. The brief required a design that placed a large consideration on the connectivity between patrons and the restaurant staff. The overall aesthetic sought old world charm, authenticity and a modern twist.

The solution retains the existing dining areas at ground level and a separate function area at the first floor level. Original timber fire places, marble floors and feature archways are retained and restored.

The bar is situated upon entry; an intimate space where patrons can enjoy a drink or snack. Dividing the main dining space is a low height partition wall that incorporates feature white ceramic wall tiles and bar benches. A key aspect to the main restaurant area is the open kitchen pass that incorporates shelving in bronzed and timber finishes, allowing merchandising and display. The design is complemented by carefully selected lighting consisting of customised pendants, fittings and linings.

Overall, the solution unites food, atmosphere and design; an experience that is classic, memorable and truly welcoming.
