victorian desalination project Wonthaggi VIC

role Architecture value $3.5 billion area 60,000m² completion date June 2012 client Thiess Degremont Joint Venture

As part of the "Our Water Our Future: The Next Stage" of the Government's Water Plan, the Victorian Government is developing Australia's largest desalination plant to produce drinking water from seawater.  The successful consortium, AquaSure will deliver one of the largest reverse-osmosis desalination plants in the world, capable of supplying up to 150 billion litres of water a year - more than a third of Melbourne's annual water needs and ensuring drinking water is available even in times of drought.

AquaSure has contracted the Thiess Degremont Joint Venture to construct the Victorian Desalination Project.  Beca and Parsons Brinckerhoff have formed a joint venture to deliver engineering design services to the Thiess Degremont Joint Venture for this project.  As part of this arrangement, peckvonhartel and ARM Pty Ltd will provide architectural services for the 25 buildings that constitute the Victorian Desalination Plant.

Work on the design phase has already commenced and water is scheduled for delivery by the end of 2011.  The design of the Plant focuses on developing the total integration of architecture and landscape on the site at Wonthaggi Victoria.
