Department of Transport Workplace

peckvonhartel was engaged by the Department of Transport to design a state-of-the-art workplace comprising 13,000m2 across six levels. The project co-locates a number of the Department’s functions and services into one purpose-designed facility, enhancing collaboration and knowledge sharing.

peckvonhartel’s scope included designing a new experience for the VicRoads Customer Hub on the ground floor of the building, a mezzanine level business lounge for their external clients, shared support spaces and social environments for staff, and base building amenities including end-of-trip facilities and a rooftop terrace.

The primary design objective is to provide value-for-money design solutions without compromising the quality of the workplace or GovHub design standards. The design team also undertook extensive base building assessments to ensure that the integrated fit-out is suitable for the Department’s current and future requirements.

The new workplace transitions the Department towards a flexible and agile workplace, with the new design motivated to support the Department’s shift towards a hybrid work style. Each member of its workforce has the independence to choose their work setting with access to a full range of support facilities. Over six floors, the Department’s personnel have access to workstations for siloed work, digitally integrated collaboration spaces and large-scale training facilities.

As a core component of the innovative engagement strategy, peckvonhartel’s design team utilised Revit 3D modelling software to deepen the team’s ability to connect with the Department’s project stakeholders and end users. This provided the department with an in-depth understanding and awareness of the built environment as it was being designed.

This live, ‘in-situ’ approach to stakeholder engagement is critical to supporting feedback and buy-in throughout the design process. Importantly, this consultation enabled peckvonhartel to test and refine early design outcomes, ensuring that the end design outcome supports the Department’s unique requirements.
