AIATSIS Business Case and Masterplan, Acton Peninsula, Canberra ACT

client AIATSIS (Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies)

role Masterplanning area 8,000m²

project value $10.4 million

completion date September 2009

peckvonhartel prepared a design opportunities report for the current Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS) facilities on the Acton Peninsula, Canberra. peckvonhartel completed the National Museum of Australia and were therefore uniquely placed to undertake the study.

AIATSIS is the premier research and collecting agency for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander societies and maintains a portfolio of activities that include policy development in culturally related areas. Operational activities at AIATSIS are compromised by the lack of space in the current building. A strategy was sought to address the accommodation needs of AIATSIS and to provide for future growth.

The strategy includes a review of the  current and projected requirements of the organisation, and a proposal for a series of discrete modifications and/or additions to the current building. These changes will allow future growth and achieve best operational practice in the future. The strategy facilitates better functional relationships, improved public entry and identity for the organisation, as well as accommodating for the projected growth in 15 years. A series of flexible areas are proposed to strengthen community programming and these areas may be developed as a separable venue for hire.
