peckvonhartel has been selected to design the Calwell Primary Library and assist Project Coordination in the delivery of the project as part of the Federal Government’s Building the Education Revolution projects.

Calwell is an elevated suburb in South Canberra, with views to the north over the Tuggeranong Valley, and views to the South West towards the Brindabella mountain range.

peckvonhartel has developed a “connected” concept where the library becomes a focal learning resource centre for the existing classroom buildings. The proposed building will contain a diverse programme including a library, a multi-purpose room, a computer classroom, a learning assistant unit classroom, and outdoor learning areas.

With advancing technology, the future needs of students must be anticipated in the design. It is crucial to adopt a forward thinking approach to the future of school design. peckvonhartel has designed a new building which not only meets the school’s current needs but at the same time also has grounded enough flexibility within the spaces generated to embrace the future of education.

The construction of the building is due to start in mid August and is expected to finish construction in time for the start of new school calendar year in 2011.
