Capital Metro is the design and construction of a 12 km light rail route from Canberra’s Central Business districts to Gungahlin Town Centre, including associated stops, depot, road, signalling preparatory and other works, light rail vehicle procurement the financing and ongoing operation and maintenance of the light rail system.

Yvonne von Hartel, founding Principal of peckvonhartel is a member of the Design Advisory Panel for Capital Metro.

Capital Metro has four key aspirations in delivery and operation; to attract Canberra to public transport through reliable, easy to use, seamless, safe clean and modern light rail transport services; to provide a light rail system that demonstrates excellence in urban deign befitting its prominent location in the primary gateway to Australia’s capital city. The system will demonstrate exemplary and creative integration with the built environment and stimulate urban renewal; to engage local industry, minimise disruption and reflect the territory‘s environmental focus on the project’s delivery and operations; to procure a light rail system that is affordable for the ACT community.

Canberra Metro, the successful consortium selected to design, own and operate the rail system are in the process of developing the design of elements of the system. Regular presentations and meetings with the Design Advisory Panel are the means by which the consortia advance the design and gain approval to proceed.
