peckvonhartel was approached to complete the Masterplan for Holmesglen TAFE in Moorabbin, Victoria. The existing campus consists of multiple buildings ranging from 1970s construction to recent new structures. The site requires a Masterplan to provide strategic direction for the next 5 years and beyond.

The site is split into two precincts separated by a car park: the front section includes the commercially operated Hemisphere Hotel and education facilities; and the rear section includes cafeteria, administration, trade workshops, and general classrooms. Access to facilities is disjointed and in varied condition and requires a complete strategy to unify and consolidate the campus.

The vision for the campus includes development of a central ‘heart’ or student hub and a focus on the continued enhancement of landscape, courtyards, and transitional spaces through improved physical and visual connections. The Masterplan maintains separation of the two precincts and adopts a ‘transformational’ approach that utilises and enhances existing facilities and conditions, rather than re-inventing the campus.

peckvonhartel was asked to investigate multiple options for the site, including a radical ‘future’ new-build option, a ‘sub-division’ option, and a ‘transformational’ option.

The final transformational recommendation proposes construction in up to 7 stages, with a focus on the student ‘heart’ in the first phase.
