peckvonhartel were engaged as principal consultant to design and document the revitalisation of the Horrie Watson pavilion for the City of Boroondara. The building is located within Deepdene Park, Balwyn and is bounded on one side by a sporting field, which provides the building’s main frontage and aspect.

The design is a simple sustainable solution that seeks to utilise and refresh as much of the existing building as possible whilst creating a contemporary extension that is designed to complement the existing brick structure, whilst being completely different in material, geometry and use.

The City of Boroondara is undertaking a major regeneration of a number of existing community facilities to increase their flexibility and patronage. peckvonhartel have been a part of this upgrade project, and the Horrie Watson pavilion is the culmination of a number of these smaller projects.

This project required the coordination of a number of different council and community stakeholders and dealt with some difficulties with latent conditions within the existing building. The final product however, saw the design achieved on budget and within the time requirements of the council and community users.

The result is a design that has been welcomed by both the local council and the surrounding neighbourhood who see the pavilion as siting respectfully within the park landscape and as a solid base for a number of community organisations that regularly utilise it.
