The new PET/CT Scanner Suite at The Canberra Hospital is a unique and complex hospital fitout. The project is to provide a fully accredited PET/CT diagnostic service for an estimated 1,000 patients per annum for the populations of the ACT and southern NSW. The new service will be complimentary to the otherwise comprehensive range of diagnostic imaging modalities offered at The Canberra Hospital, and by being located within the existing Medical Imaging Department, the diagnostic imaging functions at the hospital will remain integrated.
peckvonhartel worked closely with Thinc Health, ACT Health and The Canberra Hospital Medical Imaging Department to deliver this project with minimal impact on the operations of the adjacent hospital facilities.
The main technical challenges of the fitout were dealing with the radiation exposure to both patients and staff. The area was divided into two zones; a ‘hot zone’ and ‘cold zone,’ to signify radioactive rooms and non-radioactive rooms. The ‘hot zone’ rooms included Uptake Rooms, HOT Toilet, Scanner Room, HOT waiting, and HOT lab; all of these rooms required radiation shielding and lead lined walls.
