peckvonhartel were engaged for the refurbishment of the Punt Hill Serviced Apartments located in Flinders Lane, Melbourne. The brief was to revitalise the hotel by updating the entry and upgrading the interior public spaces to comply with current building and accessibility regulations.

The building is located within the wider reaching “Flinders Lane Precinct” which is covered by a significant Heritage Overlay. The six storey façade to Flinders Lane and Degraves Street pre date the First World War, therefore the refurbishment had to be sensitive to the existing context of the building.

The design intent of the refurbishment was to reflect Melbourne’s contemporary fabric, whilst still referencing the cultural and heritage significance of the building.

The façade has been given a bold facelift from its previously ochre and green façade to a predominantly black and white colour scheme which highlights the architectural features and creates a modern backdrop to the cafes and retail concessions on the ground floor.

Specific emphasis was placed on creating a distinctive character in the foyer area using texture and materiality. Key components of the design include the large feature floor tiles, textured wall-coverings and a mirrored reception desk. The foyer becomes a continuation of the external building treatment, which is replicated in the corridors on the floors above – providing a consistent, recognisable and dramatic change of identity.

Custom designed room signage, joinery and lighting re-enforce the bespoke, boutique style of the hotel, complementing the revitalised exterior, reception and public areas.
