peckvonhartel were commissioned as Principal Design Consultants to provide design management services to design and deliver a new regional depot for TransGrid in Tamworth.
The site is situated on the New England Highway adjacent to a live 132 KW substation that serves the Tamworth Region. The works were carefully programmed as the site was occupied and TransGrid needed to be fully operational at all times. The existing facility was demolished in stages and new buildings were constructed consecutively. The new facility has a combination of office accommodation, workshop facilities, loading docks, oil processing areas, welding workshop, battery charging areas with a wide range of storage requirements.
The new TransGrid regional depot is designed to enable easy access by large semi trailers and general utility vehicles. Extensive traffic management studies were undertaken to ensure access was available at all times through the construction, to completion. The use of large graphic letters on the workshop doors provide highly visual identifiers for vehicle drivers to easily identify workshop areas.
The facility has been designed to achieve in excess of 4.5 star NABERS rating. The warehouse area also includes a number of environmental elements with the inclusion of insulated roof panels, high performance insulation to the warehouse walls and generous clerestory day lighting.
The building fabric is predominantly metal clad with horizontal feature elements breaking the height of the façade to a human scale. The clerestory creates a lightness to the building and also allows maximum natural light into the warehouse facility.
