peckvonhartel were appointed by Sun Link Group with Purdon Planning to develop a masterplan for the University of Canberra’s Innovation Precinct. The objective of the masterplan was to identify prospective buildings and their surrounding precincts which could potentially be sold to universities based in China who were looking to create an educational link through an established Australian university.

peckvonhartel’s focus was to create a comprehensive masterplan drawn from an initial site analysis. The proposed masterplan created a functional, connected and modern precinct. It also recognised the importance of integrating the innovation hub into the existing fabric and culture of the university and Canberra’s surrounding infrastructure, including retail precincts and transport hubs.

The strengths of the masterplan include its considered response to site by creating a strong urban edge to separate the buildings from the bounding roadways, its balance of open space, car parks, internal circulation and the water-sensitive urban design.

The masterplan provided Sun Link Group with a compelling narrative to present to offshore universities looking to connect with Australia’s education industry.
